If You
Get Nothing More From This LOVE THY CUSTOMER! Look. This lesson may sound overly simplistic the first time you read it. You may even say, "That's just good old fashion common sense. Everyone knows that," and not even give it much thought. Please don't do that. Pay attention to what you're about to read here. Actually think about it and how it can apply to your business. And make it the cornerstone of all your marketing efforts. Now pay attention... Loving your customer boils down to one thing -- creating an almost fanatic sense of loyalty in your customer such that they wouldn't think of buying from anyone else. In fact, making them so crazy about you (and your products), that they practically force their friends, relatives, and anyone else who will listen to buy from you, too. Now,
before you nod off thinking this is just another Years of marketing and advertising analysis have shown that it generally costs 6-12 times as much to sell a new, first-time customer than it does to re-sell an existing customer. In other words, if it costs you $10 in various marketing costs to find and sell a new customer, It'll probably only cost you $0.83 - $1.67 in marketing expense to re-sell that customer. It's actually even better than that, because a second, third (or more), time buyer trusts you more and will more readily believe you when you explain the benefits of any particular deal. So your gross margin (profit) on sales to existing customers can often be several percentage points higher than the first time they bought. Suppose that for every$1,000 you spend in marketing, you generate $20,000 in sales and $6,000 in gross profit. Now compare that with a promotion where for every $1,000 you spend in marketing, you generate $120,000 in sales and $48,000 in gross profit by marketing to your existing customer base. See what I mean? By the way, those numbers aren't made up. They came directly from a major project I personally handled. But,
of course, that's based on the customer You see, the back-end (all the sales you make to someone after the initial sale) is always much, much more profitable than the front-end (the initial sale). In fact, many companies can afford to actually lose money on the front-end and still get rich because of the back-end. But, even when your customers adore you (and your products), they're not going to just send you money. You've got to work for it. You know... Ask for it! Pretty tough, isn't it? OK, all kidding aside. If you take good care of your customers, making a ton more money is often as easy as simply sending them a simple little letter (or email) explaining some great deal they'd be foolish to miss out on. And guess what? Between three and ten weeks later, you'll send them another letter or email explaining another great deal. And three to ten weeks later, you'll send them another... well, you get the point. It never stops. And it's all based on a simple little concept... Love Thy Customer! Of course, there's a flip side to this. If you don't take care of your customers, not only will you have to work a lot harder to make a lot less, but you won't be able to sustain (let alone grow) your business. It will get harder and harder (and more expensive) to find new people to give you a try. And eventually, you're going to run out of new people to sell to all together. Sure, there are a lot of businesses (in fact, most) where new prospects keep coming into the market. But, word gets around and eventually a lousy business develops a "rep" and even new customers won't even give them a chance. But, when you truly love your customer word gets out about that, too. And you find it easier and less expensive to find and sell new customers. And when you compound that with the significantly higher profit you make on each one, the result is absolutely astounding. What business are you in? Are you an internet entrepreneur? A brick 'n mortar entrepreneur? A professional? A service person? A retailer or wholesaler? A manufacturer? Wrong! You're not any of those business. You're in the marketing business. The sooner you grasp that, the more successful you'll be. And whenever you lose sight of it, trouble will be just around the corner. Look at it this way. No matter what business you're in, hope to be in (or think you're in), until you find a customer and sell your products or services to him or her, you're simply not in business at all. And the only way to find customers and sell to them is with your marketing. It may be internet marketing, direct mail, advertising in your local newspaper or a national magazine, doing TV commercials (or infomercials), or as simple as asking your existing customers for referrals. It's all marketing. And guess what? Loving your customer is marketing too. That's right. In fact, anything which can give a customer or prospect a feeling, image, thought, or sense of your business comes under marketing. When they shop at your store (or internet site), everything they see, hear, feel, smell, etc. comes under marketing.
